This practically painted itself. It started out as some haphazard scribbles, and at some stage I thought it looked like something I could build on, and about 4-5 hours later, this is the result. It's a little sloppy in places, but I am trying to wean myself off of excessive refining and detailing, as that's a bad habit of mine that has been holding me back in many ways.
This is, of course, a view of the Underworld capital from a low branch on Azrael's treelike tower. I hope you'll enjoy looking at it as much as I did painting it.
Hmmm... I'm glad I waited to comment until I viewed it on a few different monitors. Laptop monitor = not so good for viewing dark artwork. Anyway - now that I'm seeing it in better resolution, it looks very good! The only thing I feel is missing is some clean lines here and there, if some things in fact are 'stone' and not everything is just smoke and etherealness. (see there, I made up a word too!) It would be nice to see that contrast, if it exists, so you can tell the difference between smoke from the smokestacks and what appears to be (possibly?) flying buttresses, or the like. If it's all smoke, then I guess that doesn't matter... but I think I'd still prefer the contrast. Love the general idea though, it looks like it would make a great book illustration!
I noticed the lack of contrast as well, but not until long after I'd finished it. I was going for atmospheric haze over the more distant parts but was a bit heavy handed with it.
Thanks very much for the critique. I really appreciate it, as always!
